Common Running Mistakes

Do you experience pain when running but cannot figure out why or what’s causing it? Whether you’re a runner or any other type of athlete, it can be hard to recognize your own mistakes. Below are some common errors made by runners that are often overlooked but can lead to significant pain:

    • Asymmetrical running pattern- Landing harder on one side of the body than the other. This can signal a mechanical flaw in a person’s running style and can lead to much distress. Visiting a running clinic or physical therapist is recommended if you think you are experiencing this problem.
    • Inward knee collapse and weak hips- When knees collapse inward during a run. Doing exercises to build up the posterior gluteus medius and maximus can help resolve this issue.
    • Running on fore-foot when you’re a rear-foot runner (vice versa)- Some rear-foot runners hit harder on the rear part of the feet, where other forefoot runners will hit harder on the front part of the feet. One style is not proven better over the other, but forefoot running has gained popularity with the rise of “barefoot” running. Physical therapists can help make mechanical changes to your style if you are suffering due to this.
    • Over-striding and over-swinging- When you over-stride and swing your arms unevenly. Visiting a running clinic or physical therapist can help fix this hitch.
    • Being unaware of your foot type- Wearing the wrong shoes for your foot type and arch. Buying shoes at a specialty running-shoe store can help avoid this dilemma.
